Research Participant Screening and Registry
What is the purpose of this research? To determine your potential eligibility for studies being conducted at Auburn University.
What does participating involve? You will complete online surveys that typically take 5-10 minutes. Researchers will get in touch with you if you are eligible for other research studies.
Who is eligible to participate? Anyone 18 or older can participate in the online portion. For the MRI, you must not have any metal implants, not be claustrophobic, and not have any serious medical or psychiatric conditions.
How do I sign up? Go to aub.ie/RecruitSCAMPI to access the Recruitment Registry screening survey. You can also contact study staff at scampi@auburn.edu or at 334-521-2807.
Cannabis and Processing Emotions (CAPE)
What is the purpose of this research? The purpose of this study is to help understand the emotional, behavioral, and neural mechanisms linked to cannabis use behaviors.
What does participating involve? Participation includes completing an online screening questionnaire (~10 minutes), a screening interview (in-person or over-the-phone; 1-2 hours), a 1.5-2-hour in-person lab visit, and three 2.5-3-hour lab visits. During the study, you will answer questions about your mental health and substance use history, complete computerized tasks, participate in three transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS, a non-invasive brain stimulation technique) sessions, complete three electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, and complete four brief 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. You can earn up to $250 or up to 15.5 research credits + $55 (SONA participants only).
Who is eligible to participate? Individuals who are 18 to 50 years old are eligible to participate. You may be eligible to participate if you are a regular cannabis user and can safely have TMS & MRI procedures, including not having any metal in your body, not claustrophobic, no stimulant use, and no history of seizure.

Beliefs about the Brain: Agency, Emotional Reactivity, and Neurofeedback
What is the purpose of this research? The purpose of this study is examine the relationships between beliefs about agency (i.e., the ability to make one’s own decisions) and experiences of agency in terms of how they relate to emotional reactivity and how they predict responsivity to neurofeedback interventions.
What does participating involve? This study will be split into two parts. In part 1, participants will answer survey questions about their beliefs in agency and neurobiological determinism (i.e., that the brain determines one’s behaviors/thoughts), their knowledge about neural plasticity, their emotional reactivity/regulation, and their personality traits (including anxiety / neuroticism). In part 2, alongside the survey questions, participants will be asked to complete an emotional regulation task with or without fMRI neurofeedback. This will allow participants to visually view their brain activity in real-time, which has been shown in previous studies to help aid in learning emotion regulation.
Who is eligible to participate? Part 1 is only open to Auburn University students enrolled in psychology classes, and it can be found through the psychology SONA system. Part 2 will be open to people in the Auburn/Opelika area between 18 and 50 years old. You may be eligible to participate if you can safely have MRI procedures (no metal in body, not claustrophobic) and if you do not have a history of neurological disease, traumatic brain injury, or serious mental health conditions.
How do I sign up? If you are an Auburn University undergraduate student currently enrolled in a psychology class accepting SONA credit, go to aub.ie/RecruitBARN to participate. Part 2 will begin recruiting participants once part 1 has completed (late 2025).
